State will be the world’s first global opinion network.

We’re setting out to build a better internet based on what people think. That might sound like a lofty goal, but we have a ground-breaking idea and the technical muscle to back it up. We’ve been working on the site for more than two years, and we’re getting ready to share what we’ve made with millions of potential users.

State was founded by Alex Asseily (co-founder of Jawbone) and his brother Mark (ex-Skype and Rebtel). We have some incredible advisors on board, including Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web. And we’re looking for talented, challenge-driven individuals to join us.

We're looking for a talented and creative developer to join our team. As well as being a great developer with front-end web experience (JavaScript, CSS) you're a real enthusiast for things like open data and APIs. Your role will be to both create tools and services to help broad distribution of our service and to help developers and partners create cool and creative things. In addition you'll work with our core team on our main service. As well as being a key contributor on the software side we expect you'll have a lot of ideas about new things we could do.

The core of the job is a great understanding of development for the modern web, backed up by a base of solid software engineering, and excellent communication skills. In addition the following are required:

  • Strong JavaScript and front-end development expertise, ideally including mobile web experience and HTML5, CSS3
  • Ruby on Rails expertise in a consumer web environment or desire to learn it
  • Experience as a software engineer in a team: familiar with git, agile development practices, code reviews
  • Involved in online communities around things like open data, hack days, open source software, visualisation

Bonus Points

We are a flexible team and so the work will be distributed differently depending on the skills of each new starter. However any of these would be generally very helpful:

  • Distribution tools such as Facebook apps, Wordpress plugins, widgets of various forms
  • Knowledgeable about various popular developer platforms, APIs and services
  • Good API designer, understanding what REST is, when to use and when not to use it
  • Experience as a publisher of an API
  • Principled understanding of authorisation and authentication, privacy and security
  • Experience in modelling structured data and domain knowledge
  • Strong computer science background

You must already have UK work authorisation and be able to work full-time in London.
